I had been playing guitar for decades. Then something funny happened in spring 2010. I saw a text by someone on a forum, I snatched it, and turned it into a song in about an hour. That was my first melody, and the next followed shortly after (same story). They weren't particularly good, but they were complete in the sense that you could not improve them.
Song writing is a skill, or several subskills, and they can be trained. That is what we are doing on these sites, among others:
I used to play classical guitar, ragtime a.o. Now I am more into blues & rock. But I like SONGS, melodies, stories, and in the end it's all pop music of sorts.
